“Whatever happened to you

happened to me.”

she assured me

when she saw me looking down.

A large black woman

in an orange blouse

and lots of interesting jewelry

at a gay bar.

It came at the right time.

 

Something had hit me hard that night.

I’m no longer even sure what it was.

Hard enough that I couldn’t hide it.

She offered support

in a way that got to me

immediately.  Solidarity.

What brings you down

brings me down.  We’re

all connected and share

each other’s burden.

 

We will also rise up together.
